Micron (MU) Stock at $931 After China’s CXMT Memory…

Updated 13 October 2026. Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) traded at $931.00 at 9:32 a.m. ET, down 5.9 percent from Monday’s $989.04 close (Yahoo Finance). Monday’s session had already taken 3.88 percent off the stock. The trigger is the same one that knocked 7.4 percent off Samsung and 10 percent off SK hynix in Seoul: China’s CXMT says it will launch DDR5 server memory on a denser 4F2 cell design before the end of 2026. Verdict: the CXMT threat aims at Micron’s most profitable product, server DRAM, but it comes with no specifications, yields or named customers. At about 5 times forward earnings the stock already prices a cycle peak. Reference levels: $820 below, $1,200 above.

Key facts

  • Price: $931.00 at 9:32 a.m. ET, against $989.04 on Monday and $1,029.00 on Friday 9 October (Yahoo Finance). Over the two sessions the stock is down about 9.5 percent.
  • The trigger: CXMT president Cao Kanyu said at a Shanghai industry event that the company plans DDR5 RDIMM server modules built on a 4F2 cell structure by the end of 2026. CXMT did not disclose specifications or a launch date (Investing.com via Yahoo Finance, 12 October).
  • The sector: in Seoul on Tuesday Samsung Electronics closed down 7.39 percent and SK hynix down 10.09 percent, and the KOSPI’s sell-side sidecar was triggered (Naver Finance). In US premarket trading SanDisk, Western Digital and Seagate also fell sharply (CNBC, TradingKey).
  • CXMT’s size: about 8 percent of global DRAM revenue in the first quarter of 2026, more than double a year earlier (Counterpoint Research).
  • Micron’s last quarter: fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $54.23 billion and non-GAAP EPS of $33.42; fiscal first-quarter 2027 guidance of $61.5 billion, plus or minus $1.5 billion, with non-GAAP gross margin of about 86.25 percent (Micron 8-K, 30 September).
  • Labour: the union at Micron’s Taoyuan, Taiwan operation voted 1,994 to 14 on 7 October to authorise a strike, seeking 15 percent of operating profit through a formula-based profit-sharing system. No strike date has been set (24/7 Wall St, Seoul Economic Daily).
  • Range: 52-week high $1,255.00 on 25 June 2026; the September low was $902.60 on 14 September (Yahoo Finance).

Why CXMT matters more to Micron than the headline suggests

Most of Micron’s money now comes from data centres. In the fiscal fourth quarter its Core Data Center and Cloud Memory units together brought in $34.28 billion, about 63 percent of revenue, and DRAM was about 73 percent of sales (Micron 8-K). Server DRAM modules such as DDR5 RDIMMs are exactly the product CXMT named. A Chinese competitor moving into that market, rather than the consumer and mobile memory where it has grown so far, is a threat to Micron’s best margins.

The 4F2 design itself is not new. Mainstream DRAM uses a 6F2 cell; a 4F2 cell stands the transistor on end so each bit takes less area, which can raise density and lower cost per bit. Samsung and SK hynix are both developing it, and Samsung has reportedly targeted sub-10-nanometre DRAM production on the design by 2028 (Yahoo Finance). What surprised the market is that CXMT says it will ship first.

Why the market may be overreacting

A plan is not supply. CXMT published no density, speed or yield figures and named no customers. Server memory goes through long qualification at hyperscalers and server makers before it is bought in volume, and analysts quoted in the Korean coverage said stable mass production and customer qualification have to be shown before the impact can be judged (KM Journal). CXMT also faces US export controls on advanced chipmaking equipment, which limit how fast it can scale.

Micron’s own numbers are still moving the other way. Its guide for the current quarter is $61.5 billion, up 13 percent on the quarter just reported. On 1 October Stock Analysis put its forward price-to-earnings ratio at about 6.0 on a $1,065.11 share price, which implies roughly $176 of forward earnings per share. At $931.00 that is about 5.3 times, a multiple that already assumes the memory cycle is near its top.

Micron stock: bull, base and bear

Scenario Price What has to happen Anchor
Bear $820 CXMT publishes specifications or a named server customer, the Taiwan dispute turns into a walkout, and Wednesday’s CPI print adds rate pressure to the AI-spending worries. Below the $902.60 September low; about 4.7 times the implied $176 of forward EPS.
Base $900-$1,030 No further detail from CXMT; the Taiwan unions keep talking; the market waits for evidence on memory pricing. The September low at the bottom, Friday’s $1,029.00 pre-news close at the top.
Bull $1,200 DRAM contract prices keep rising, hyperscalers confirm 2027 orders, and CXMT’s timeline slips. Morgan Stanley’s Overweight target set before the 30 September results (Yahoo Finance), below the $1,255 52-week high.

The bear case sits below the current price and the September low; the base and bull anchors are published levels, and the bull case is a named firm’s target, not a FinanceFeeds forecast. Before Monday, JPMorgan’s Harlan Sur had a $1,540 target and Baird’s Tristan Gerra $1,520 (TheStreet, TipRanks); our Micron results-day page has the full breakdown of the quarter.

The Taiwan strike risk

Taiwan produced most of Micron’s DRAM in 2025, and the company employs about 15,000 people there (24/7 Wall St). The Taoyuan union has authorised a strike but not called one; its chair, Jerry Lin, said it has not decided on a schedule. The larger risk is Taichung, where a union of about 11,000 members has not yet voted and has mediation with Micron on 22 October. A Taoyuan union rally in Taipei is planned for 19 October, which the union says is not a strike. Micron has said it is committed to good-faith engagement and mediation.

What to watch next

  • Wednesday 14 October, 8:30 a.m. ET: US September CPI. Higher yields hit high-multiple chip stocks first, though Micron’s multiple is low.
  • Any CXMT detail: density, yields or a named customer would turn the headline into a measurable threat.
  • Korean memory stocks: Samsung and SK hynix trade first each day; we covered Tuesday’s rout in Samsung stock after the CXMT claim.
  • 19 and 22 October: the Taoyuan rally and the Taichung mediation.

Quick take: Micron at $931.00 has lost about 9.5 percent in two sessions on a CXMT roadmap with no numbers and a Taiwan strike vote with no date. Both are real risks, and CXMT’s target is the server DRAM that now drives Micron’s margins. But nothing in the past two days changes the $61.5 billion guide for this quarter. The base case is a range between the September low and Friday’s close; a break of $900 opens the $820 bear case, and a return toward $1,200 needs firm memory pricing and calm in Taiwan.

FAQ

Why is Micron stock down today?

China’s CXMT said it plans to launch DDR5 server memory on a 4F2 cell design by the end of 2026, raising fears about DRAM pricing. Memory stocks fell worldwide, led by SK hynix and Samsung in Seoul.

What is CXMT?

ChangXin Memory Technologies is China’s largest DRAM maker. It had about 8 percent of global DRAM revenue in the first quarter of 2026, according to Counterpoint Research.

Is CXMT a threat to Micron?

Over several years, potentially, because it is targeting server memory, Micron’s most profitable market. In the near term the announcement lacks specifications, yields and customer qualification, and CXMT is limited by US equipment export controls.

Will Micron workers in Taiwan strike?

The Taoyuan union voted on 7 October to authorise a strike but has set no date. The larger Taichung union has not voted and is due in mediation on 22 October.

Could Micron stock fall to $820?

That is our bear case. It would take concrete CXMT specifications or customers, a walkout in Taiwan and more rate pressure. It sits below the $902.60 September low.

What is Micron’s guidance?

For fiscal first-quarter 2027 Micron guided to revenue of $61.5 billion, plus or minus $1.5 billion, non-GAAP EPS of $38.15, plus or minus $1.00, and non-GAAP gross margin of about 86.25 percent.
